HANA preview 3: Bennet

This is easily one of my best likenesses. It's not just the glasses (people with distinctive facial features are easier to draw - beards, glasses etc) it's just that I seem to have a really good handle on Jack Coleman. He's got such a great face and his presence as HRG/Mr. Bennet is incredible.

He's easily the most consistent and expressive likeness I do.

Again, I gotta say just how much fun I'm having. When I pull out an image like above, I sit back in my chair and go, "Wow. I did that." A huge smile comes over my face and then I plow straight into the next one.

Again, I will talk about how I do this and how I approached this project after it's uploaded. (No idea when - but my deadline for the first 11 pages is wednesday the 25th - so I figure it will go up the monday/tuesday after that). All I will say now is that I don't want it to look too much like a photo, and I don't want it to look too much like an illustration. The show is the show, and the comics are the comics - but I believe there needs to be a visual balance between the two.

On the good news, I just got approval from NBC for the art. They seem to really like it. A couple of great suggestions and I'm back onto new pages. Page 8... wow. Immensely detailed. It's fun but it's gonna cost me.

Be aware that I have taken on KJC's advice and asked NBC for permission. Do a quick download cos these all might come down. I might be whisked off my MIBs and never to be seen again.

COMPETITION: Ok, I need some help from the ladies. Hana is going out clubbing. (Please... don't ask). It's an elite night club and she's out to paint the town red. What should she wear? Please attach links with some images in the comments section. Winner will see their choice in the comic! (I prefer women, cos from all the guys I know... we have NO fashion sense).

Gotta fly off to work. Will talk about page assembly tomorrow. Sorry!

Friggin' HAWT. That's all I can say about Bennet, really, just an awesome drawing all around. Whatever he's talking about, it looks interesting, And I love the way the far side of his face is lit.

As for stuff for Hana to wear, it sorts depends on the club... I'll get back to you on this one.

Okay, well if it's a really upscale place, you might want to go with something longer but still, you know, eye-grabbing. Something like http://www.a1clubwear.com/glamour-wear/images/3595.jpg, but not in black, especially if the club is gonna be dark. Throwing in some really glam bracelets or something would work for it.

If she's gonna be doing a lot of moving around though, something shorter would work too. Hana strikes me as someone who would go for prints. Maybe a print like http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-12448320617630_1944_76217779 on a dress like http://images.forplaycatalog.com/product_large_size_images/FPDRS40.jpg (without the weird sash thing)? But I suppose that wouldn't be very practical for drawing purposes.

Something like http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-12448320617630_1944_43273797 would be good, go for a more simple look, but throw in a nice necklace and bracelet or something to make it pop. Here's a back view http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-12448320617630_1943_60704351

And then there's this, http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-12448320617630_1947_61440649 http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/yhst-12448320617630_1947_36575025, which is really different and has a total secret agent vibe.

That's all I got.

You said it best: "wow" with the Bennet picture. NBC would be rather dumb to not pick up your art.

As a man who goes out quite often (and probably for continuity with the War Buddies Part 1), Hana may want something similar to that. If it's a New York club especially. Someone her age isn't wearing stuff the college girls wear these days, so stay away from "preppy" stuff. But correct, a guy's view isn't one to take accurately. Good luck!

Reposting, because this thing ate my HTML and did weird things with it. D=

I'm a married man, so it's been awhile for me--but I'm going to second Leshia's simple look.

Bennet looks ... perfect. It's not hyper-realistic (like the Pentagon in the last graphic novel) and it's not super cartoony (like Micah Gunnell's talented yet over-simplistic work). I'm psyched.

Please don't model Hana's dress.

Hey Jason. First, let me say I'm really glad you've contacted NBC about permissions. I was worried about that too. I feel better now. :)

On to my suggestions. You can take a look at the things I've pulled together in my photobucket: http://s150.photobucket.com/albums/s118/curlymarie_2007/Jason/

One of them is a sketch I put together quickly. (You'll have to forgive my weak figure drawing skills.) The others are pictures I've found.

I went with pants for Hana instead of a dress or skirt because I assume that in this story, she's not going to a club for fun! I figure she's got some kind of action planned, so I wanted to choose something she could move around in if necessary. I did include a couple of dresses, just for silhouette ideas.

The choice of fabrics and materials will be key for creating the upscale look. I'd suggest a top in silk--preferably charmeuse, with a dark denim jean, the boots in leather, and metallic jewelry accents. I didn't color my drawing, and won't suggest any colors, because I'm sure you've already got a color scheme working.

I hope you get some good ideas from everyone. I can't wait to see how this turns out! Thanks so much for letting us be part of the process.

Well, the page link I tried to include didn't work. But I did also link it to my name, so just click on my name and you'll get to the album with the pictures. Sorry about that!

Nice work on the stuff so far, can't wait to see the full versions :)

I rend to read the comic via the jpgs that feed the 'interactive' reader... but that takes a bit of finagling and such (nothing I'm not used to doing anyway) to see all the pages... but it works for me. :) They wind up being nice and clear... I haven't looked at the PDF files since they kept crashing my browser... but one day I'll get back to them...

Sale is the artist on the show, and you've become one of the major artists on the comics... good job! :)

What program do you color in? I'm dabbling in Painter, but I mainly use Photoshop (when I color.. which hasn't been in quite a few years).. I also assume you have a tablet...

I know it's not the tools that make the skills, it's the person's ability with the tools to showcase their skills... I've seen some great work done in Microsoft Paint, and horrendous work done in Photoshop... but I'm just curious as to which program(s) you use to color in

Anonymous said...

well, now you've just made me even more impatient to see the rest of the comic. I'm tempted to even to skip uni so I'm at home when it's released instead of waiting until I get home.

As for clothes, Leisha had some lovely dresses, but it just doesn't sit with me when it comes to Hana. I don't see her in a dress, especially if she's on a mission. In the first of the War Buddies one, where she rocked up in a dress to pick that bloke up, it irritated me a little. Then I understood it because of what her intentions were. But she's a little bit of a tomboy, where a dress would only be a real inconvenience , especially if you were needed to be a little more flexible, like run or something. You'd have to hitch the dress right up and screw what little shred of dignity you had left in order to do so. (which is also something to consider, I wouldn't put her in heels over 3 inch, otherwise you're asking for trouble)

So if that's convinced you to go for pants, I pulled up a few options for you. If she's going to an elite nightclub, you'll be talking designer. Hana struck me as a Dolce Gabbana girl, so here are four pulled off the website, and a Calvin Kline one thrown in for luck

One
Two
Three
Four
Five

And colour wise, I see her in black with maybe a splash of red, but not really. She strikes me as the black on black with black and the only difference in the texture.

Well, I hope that helps, and if they all turn out like Mr Bennet up there, I don't think you have anything to worry about at all. :D

Wow guys, wow! Ok, I'm not going to get to this til tomorrow to give the fashion research machine more time. But I felt I should add some stuff. She has to be in a dress - the script says so. I don't deviate from the script. To do so is to invite possible redraws. And she's going out for major partying not action (you will find out why!). Mind you, I'm going to use a lot of the other outfits especially Curlymarie's sketch and those D&G outifts for the rest of the comic.

Right now Leshia's stuff is the front runner simply cos it's what I need.

Hey Jason, great work on Bennet! You've really got Jack Coleman's likeness down very well!!
As for your challenge, here's my quick sketch:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/racerchick/reddress.jpg

Just about any color will work on this one. The length would be pretty easily adjustable, too. I based it on a MUCH longer dress I found while shopping for a prom dress a while back that I likedbut didn't dare get it lol. Red's not my color :P The little (badly detailed) lines on the v-neck and the slit are little metal clasps. The straps split into two pieces and criss-cross in the back, instead of tying or coming together at the top like a normal halter, just for a little more flair. :)

*I deleted a post and reposted, as, for some reason, my link got shortened :S

Hey, quick note:

A friend pointed out to me that Mr. Bennet's not wearing a wedding ring in this image. I don't know if it's flipped, or if it's intentional, or if it's too late (your deadline is the 25th, right?), but I just thought I'd bring it to your attention.

Holy crap, Jason, your likeness of Bennet is freaking fantastic. Just.. whoa.

As for dresses, not sure just how upscale this club is, but here are a couple random suggestions:

-crappy doodle of a halter dress
-nice little red dress, not sure if it'll fit the scene though.

Uhhh. Ok, apparently that's all I can come up with. Woo! I also really dig Leshia's suggestion, too.

Here are some suggestions for dresses. The only difference would be if she's going out with friends or with a guy the length of the dress might be slightly shorter for a guy.

http://www.fredericks.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=Holiday2002&category%5Fname=Eveningwear&product%5Fid=21123
I think this would flatter Hana's body type very well.

http://www.bergdorfgoodman.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod18000058&parentId=cat248509&masterId=cat80001&index=7&cmCat=cat000000cat000002cat000009cat80001cat248509
This is more designer and upscale but also would flatter her body type...although I would shorten it to just above the knee

http://www.bergdorfgoodman.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?cmCat=search&itemId=prod11360004
again would shorten to above knee and possibly make the back a tad more revealing

Sabre: I draw totally in Photoshop. I will go into more detail in a future post.

WIckedM: thanks for the suggestions. Some of your links didn't work.

Megiddo: I couldn't get yours to work either. It just took me to the Victoria's Secret index page.

acidburn133: I can't get your link to work and would love to see your sketch.

Ryan: oooh! good one! thanks. He doesn't take it off for missions does he?

HTH: I couldn't get any of your links to work. If you check them, they're all the same link!

Peeps: Check that you're not directing me to a frame. If I don't come from the correct page, I can't load the html.

About 6 hours to go...

Jason, I just checked my links and if I just copy and paste the whole link into a browser I get the 5 different dresses I chose. Very weird. I'm reposting them here to see if it works. I'm a total computer dud so I have no idea how to make the links work.

http://www.fredericks.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=Holiday2002&category%5Fname=Eveningwear&product%5Fid=21123

http://www.bergdorfgoodman.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod18000058&parentId=cat248509&masterId=cat80001

http://www.bergdorfgoodman.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?cmCat=search&itemId=prod18270006

I just double checked these and you can see that the first one is from Fredricks of Hollywood and the other 4 are from the bergdorf goodman website but have 4 distinct product codes.

sorry about all this extra work for you. Hope This Helps (HTH)

So when ya ask the ladies to strut their fashion knowhow, they really outdo themselves, don't they? I think this is comment #20--wow.

I don't remember Bennet ever removing his ring for missions. (So he's going on a mission, is he?) In fact, he was wearing his ring when he shot Claude, shot Sylar, and used a Taser gun.

BTW, Bart's hair--9 spikes, if I recall correctly? (I'm somewhat of a nerd--I mean, a student of The Simpsons DVD commentaries.

Okay, here is a website that has tons of great ideas that I love even more than the ones I've already posted.

www.dresses.com - click on collections and then go into cocktails. I think that dresses 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 19, 24, 26, 35 would be really great. My personal favorites are 5, 13, and 19.
